Movies I Had Hoped Got Nominated
The following movies are ones that I both loved and had scenes that I still think about today, but got no Oscars love.
Hereditary
One of the best and most frightening horror movies I’ve seen in a long time. There were even things I didn’t notice the first time I watched it that I did notice the second time and scared me even more. The performances of every character were fantastic. The story had elements that allow its viewers to discuss this movie even 6 months after its release.
Nominations I was hoping for: Original Screenplay; Toni Collette Lead Actress
Mandy
What was wrong with this, Acadamy? Was it Nicholas Cage downing a handle of liquor in like… a minute? Was it the burning of a live woman? Was it the insane amount of cocaine? Was it the gore? Or was it the chainsaw battle at the end? Because to me, those are all reasons this movie SHOULD have been nominated. Not to mention this is one of the most visually pleasing, well lit, well colored, well shot, well orchestrated, and insane horror movies I have ever seen. Ever. Nicholas Cage outdid himself this time and this is without a doubt my most favorite performance by him.
Nominations I was hoping for: Original Screenplay; Nicholas Cage Lead Actor; Linus Roache Supporting Actor; Cinematography; Visual Effects; Score
Sorry To Bother You
This was where the line was drawn for me, Acadamy. This was one of the funniest, wildest, most original movies I’ve seen in a while. I cannot emphasize how insane this movie gets at the start of the 3rd act.
Nominations I was hoping for: Original Screenplay, Directing, Lakeith Stanfield Lead Actor
Overlord
It’s because of the Nazis isn’t it, Acadamy? Overlord honestly surprised me. I went in expecting a mediocre acting, shitty effects, and wacky dialogue. Instead, what I got was incredible particle effects, enjoyable dialogue, and a wild fun adventure. This movie was a refreshing time at the movies, much better than the other garbage that was being released during this time. There are literally only 3 movies nominated for Make-up. Seriously Acadamy? You could’ve added 1 more.

Nominations I was hoping for: Make-up; Costume
Widows
Get fucked Ocean’s 8. A perfect cast, Viola Davis is a badass, Daniel Kaluuya is genuinely frightening, fantastically written, perfectly paced, and a dog that is way too adorable.
Nominations I was hoping for: Adapted Screenplay; Editing; Viola Davis Lead Actress; Daniel Kaluuya Supporting Actor
Three Identical Strangers
I don’t usually watch documentaries, but this one was incredible. When it starts out as a heart-warming story about 3 brother reuniting, I was like “Okay, this is cool”. Then, when the twist happens, and we go down the path of the second half, I was like (with mouth agape) “Holy fucking shit. This is insane!” Not to mention the ending that could leave a viewer thinking “Wait… what?”.
Nominations I was hoping for: Documentary feature
Blindspotting
Genuinely funny, fantastic performances, incredible writing, relevant, and thought-provoking with an emotional and phenomenally performed final scene.
Nominations I was hoping for: Daveed Diggs Lead Actor, Rafael Casal Supporting Actor
Den Skylidge (The Guilty)
Another perfect example of the fact that you do not need a high production value to make a great movie and that foreign films can be just as good as what Hollywood produces. Jakob Cedergren’s performance, the atmosphere, the suspense, the character development/writing, and a nice twist were all fantastic.
Nominations I was hoping for: Foreign Film
You Were Never Really Here
Definitely one of my most favorite Joaquin Phoenix performances.
Nominations I was hoping for: Joaquin Phoenix Lead Actor, Original Screenplay, Score
Suspiria
Nominations I was hoping for: Cinematography
Final Consensus:
Fuck this.
